A long time ago, the Israelites were in the wilderness. God told Moses to count all the people who were at least one month old. This was important so God could know how many people there were.
The Israelites were divided into 12 tribes, each named after one of Jacob's sons. Each tribe had a leader who helped count the people. The leaders counted the people in their tribes and reported the numbers to Moses and Aaron.
The total number of men who were at least 20 years old and able to fight in the army was 603,550. The Levites were not counted with the other tribes because they were special helpers in the tabernacle.
