2 Kings chapter 8 tells us about God’s care for His people, the truth of His word, and the results of good or bad choices.

The chapter begins with the Shunammite woman whose son Elisha had brought back to life. Elisha warned her that a famine would come to the land for seven years. A famine is a time when there is very little food. He told her to go and live somewhere else until the famine was over. The woman trusted the prophet and obeyed. She moved with her family to the land of the Philistines and stayed there for seven years.

When the famine ended, she returned to Israel. But during her time away, someone had taken her land. She went to the king to ask for her property back. At that very moment, the king was talking to Gehazi, Elisha’s servant, about the miracles Elisha had done. Gehazi was telling the story of how Elisha had raised the woman’s son from the dead. Just then, the woman and her son came in to speak to the king. The king was surprised and saw that God had arranged this moment. He ordered that her land be returned to her, along with all the food grown on it during those seven years. This shows that God can arrange events in perfect timing and that He cares for those who obey Him.

Next, Elisha traveled to Damascus in Syria. The king of Syria, named Ben-Hadad, was very sick. He sent a man named Hazael with gifts to ask Elisha if he would recover. Elisha said the king would recover from the sickness, but he would still die. Elisha then stared at Hazael and began to cry. He knew that Hazael would become king and would cause much suffering to Israel. Hazael was surprised, but the next day he killed King Ben-Hadad and became king himself. This part shows that God knows the future, even when people do not.

The chapter then talks about the kings of Judah. Jehoram, the son of Jehoshaphat, became king. Unlike his father, Jehoram did not follow God. He married a daughter from King Ahab’s family and began to...

The chapter then talks about the kings of Judah. Jehoram, the son of Jehoshaphat, became king. Unlike his father, Jehoram did not follow God. He married a daughter from King Ahab’s family and began to worship false gods. Because of his bad leadership, the nation of Edom rebelled and broke away from Judah. Even though Jehoram did wrong, God did not completely destroy Judah because He had promised King David that his family line would continue.

After Jehoram died, his son Ahaziah became king. He also did evil because he followed the sinful example of Ahab’s family. Ahaziah joined King Joram of Israel to fight against Hazael, who was now king of Syria. During the battle, Joram was wounded and went to Jezreel to recover. Ahaziah went there to visit him.
